Her voice is there
beneath the breeze if you listen
she is speaking with each sunrise
child, she says
do you not feel my heartbeat
pulsing beneath your feet
my veins the rivers you drink from
I am your daily bread
the sky your grandfather’s
grandfather prayed to
my ocean my trees my mountains
there is no life without me
yet you so carelessly
swing your selfishness
wounding worlds beyond what you can see

It’s said that the first seven years of life set It’s said that the first seven years of life set the foundation for our identity and self esteem. During that time, Rafer Johnson gave me something most fatherless kids never have: love, kindness, and affirmation from a strong male figure.

He was an Olympic gold medalist, philanthropist, and pillar of the community, but I knew him as Jenny and Josh’s dad. As a family friend, his presence in my childhood created some balance to the emotional injury of my father’s absence, and where I felt unclaimed and rejected, he made me feel protected and loved. I realize now, presence is far more powerful than absence, and his choice to show up in that way was a blessing beyond measure.

As a little girl, he was the sun, moon and stars to me, an angel God placed in my life when I needed it most. Now as he joins the ancestors, I grieve his departure, but am filled to overflowing with gratitude I will hold sacred in my heart, until we meet again.
Thank you, Rafer. I love you always.
As a kid, my mom gave me books about Native Americ As a kid, my mom gave me books about Native American art & culture because she wanted me to be proud of my heritage. I didn’t grow up with my dad, but I knew that he took pride in being Black, and also in being Native. It was part of his identity, so it has always been part of mine. When my brother and I met later in life, one of the things that bonded us was that connection. We used to say, β€œOur mom’s are white, our dad is Black, and us, we’re Indians.” That was who we were, who we resonated with spiritually, who we saw in ourselves.

I am thinking of my relatives across the entire continent, from Cheraw (S. Carolina) to Turtle Island (Canada). I am thinking of the ancestors, my brother now among them. I am honoring them today & always, holding them in the deepest and most sacred part of my heart.

From my Grandmother, who pledged AKA at Fisk, to my Godmother, who pledged DST at Howard, to my beloved Sorors of the Eta Kappa chapter of DST at Spelman, with this victory, Kamala shines for all of us. #SayHerName Her heart beats in realms you can no #SayHerName
Her heart beats
in realms you can not see.
These fleshy, fragile suits
are but vessels.
You can’t box up the sun
or hold the milky way hostage,
can’t capture the wind,
chain something as illusive as sound.
Her name is written
in the ridges of your palm
hidden beneath your first waking breath.
She is in the sky,
in sunsets
golden violets and blues,
in the clouds, in the waves,
her name is written there too.

I love James Baldwin. Beyond being a brilliant wri I love James Baldwin. Beyond being a brilliant writer, artist, intellect and activist, he was unapologetic in speaking truth to power. His unwavering integrity & courage shifted perspectives, opened minds, and challenged a culture of complacency born of a colonized society.

Reparations for Black people everywhere, land back for First Nations everywhere, equal rights for LGBTQ+ communities everywhere, ICE & the police abolished, and respect for Mother Earth & the animal kingdom restored.... but for now, I’ll settle for one thing: arrest the cops who killed Breonna Taylor. Thank you and have a blessed day.
